elpa-diminish software package provides hiding or abbreviation of the mode line displays of minor-modes, you can install in your Debian 9 (Stretch) by running the commands given below on the terminal,
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install elpa-diminish
elpa-diminish is installed in your system.
Make ensure the elpa-diminish package were installed using the commands given below,
$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep elpa-diminish *
You will get with elpa-diminish package name, version, architecture and description in a table
